Unbuilt Architecture 2

2 - An Ideal City - Competition to design Canberra
http://www.idealcity.org.au/46/shortlist-18.html
Location - Canberra, Australia.

In 1911 a competition was held to design a capital city, this city is known as Canberra. 137 entries from around the world where considered. In May 1912, Walter Burley Griffin won the competition to design Australia’s capital city. Although submitted in Walter’s name, the plan was formulated in collaboration with Marion Mahony Griffin.

Second place went to Eliel Saarinen. Eliel Saarinen’s monumental massing of architecture around formal water basins was grand. It has imposing axes linking prominent locations. The river is forced into an artificial configuration, and has ten bridges, making it an expensive plan to build.

It is this second place entry that I think would be a interesting design to develop and build in Crysis. It would also give people a chance to experience what Australia’s capital city could have been like if this entry had won instead.

The large scale of this design and its early design phase means that there is a lot of room for innovation and exploration. As well as giving the chance expand upon it to create a very large scale realtime environment.
