Unbuilt Architecture 1

Unbuilt Architecture

1 - Zira Island Masterplan

Location - Baku, Azerbaijan

The Zira Island Masterplan is a island master plan created by BIG a an architectural firm that works mainly with competitions and unbuilt architecture that doesn’t often get created.

The master plan is a design for a zero energy resort and entertainment city on the island or Zira which is situated in the Caspian Sea, within the bay of Baku. The island resort is designed to be a sustainable model for urban development.

I think this is a very significant piece of unbuilt architecture because Azerbaijan as a young, developing Post-soviet democracy, are rediscovering their national identity. A master plan like this is a significant and dramatic step in the right direction for a developing country. Architecture like this encapsulates a region or community, and shows it off to the world.

I think this would an ideal piece of unbuilt architecture because it is of large scale, so different parts can be completed by different people and it can be expanded on and built upon. Since it hasn’t been entirely resolved and designed it leaves plenty of room for interpretation and design of our own. I think it would be entirely possible to create with the Cryengine. I think it is a great master plan and could lead to some amazing results and resolutions by building it in Crysis.
